Flexible polyurethane foam stands out as one of the most adaptable materials available today. We encounter it everywhere! This foam is commonly found in cushioning for various furniture and bedding items, as well as in carpet underlay, packaging, insulation, soundproofing, and numerous other uses.
What does the density of foam mean, and what makes it significant?
The density of foam, expressed in pounds per cubic foot, is calculated by weighing a 12-inch cube. Foams with greater density are generally more resilient and longer-lasting than their lower density counterparts. Although two foams may have similar compression or ILD ratings, the one with higher density will outlast the other before showing signs of sagging.

- Foam Density refers to the weight of the foam per cubic foot, indicating its quality and durability. Higher density generally means better support and longer-lasting foam [1].
- Foam Firmness (often measured by ILD – Indentation Load Deflection) indicates how soft or firm the foam feels. This is independent of density; a high-density foam can be soft, and a low-density foam can be firm [4].
To measure foam for replacing couch cushions, use one of these methods:
- Remove the old foam and measure its length, width, and thickness. Generally you should order the same size foam, with fibre wrapped in the same direction (usually Top, Bottom, and Front).
- Measure seam to seam on the fabric to get length, width, and thickness. Add 0.5” to all measurements to ensure a snug fit and wrap with fibre
High-density foam has a higher weight per cubic foot, indicating a greater amount of material and better overall quality. It provides superior support and longevity, making it suitable for high-traffic areas and heavier use.
High Resiliency (HR) foam is designed to have a higher bounce and quick recovery, providing excellent support and comfort. It is often used in premium furniture and mattresses due to its durability and comfort-enhancing properties.
Wrapping foam in dacron or fiber offers several benefits:

- Smooth appearance: Helps to maintain the shape and look of the cushion by preventing the foam from showing through the fabric.
